The Most Expensive Dog   by Daniel Teik Meng Ewe

The most expensive dog in the global world today is a red Tibetan Mastiff. It was sold for a cool US$1.5 million to a coal baron in China. Some people might say that the price paid was a bit steep but then again who are we to say when other people are willing to pay for it. The following are the reasons that the coal baron could have probably digested before he made the decision to pay for the asking price.

Tibetan Mastiff is considered a holy breed. It was considered such because it was used to guard temples in China back in the olden days. Apparently, this breed does good guarding job too. In addition, by guarding temples the people that took care and fed them are monks and nuns. Hence, these people are deemed holy and therefore passed on the holiness to the breed.

These days in China there are an increase in the economic standing of her people. China today is totally different from China of yesteryears. Today China is one of the major country and power of the world with massive wealth. The Chinese people equate prestige with wealth. They are willing to pay for the things they need, want and desire. For the rich price can be rather inelastic for them. The coal baron that bought the dog could have attributed the price paid for it as a prestige purchase. In China today scores of branded items are doing well because of the massive demand.

Superstition could be another factor. Tibetan Mastiff are said to resemble a lion. To the Chinese the lion is a symbol of strength. With having something of strength they believe it can bring good fortune which is of importance to the Chinese people. To add, the breed’s red colour would be more of interest to the Chinese people. Chinese people like the colour red as they associate it with prosperity.

Another factor of interest of the breed it is rarity. A lot of people have not come across this breed. They are not numerous in the world as well as in China. With rarity it comes with prestige if the breed is well demanded. This could be why the breed is so well sought after in China and now gaining popularity in the world too.

Expensive dogs are usually seen as other breed other that the Tibetan Mastiff. Now this has changed and this breed is up there on price. There is an increase in people wanting to have them as pets especially people of Chinese descent. It remains to be seen if this breed will remain the priciest. One thing is for sure is that the breed has already made history as the most expensive dog.
